The KISS – Keep It Simple, Stupid – principle is one very close to our heart, especially when it comes to the way the websites we so proudly put our name to are designed and developed. Simplicity really does matter, with the user experience (UX) positively influenced in particular. In this blog post, we explore how, and share the rules every business owner in the market for a new website should abide by.
The KISS principle is no new thing. It was actually made famous back in the 60s, with the slogan coined by an aircraft engineer in the US Navy, who wanted to simplify aircraft design processes. The acronym has since been used across many other areas to strip back design goals to the essentials that really matter.
KISS has long been used in the world of web design and development to ensure simplicity, clarity and, ultimately, user friendliness. And 65 years since it was coined, it still remains relevant.
Simplicity has never been so important for websites, with complex designs that are more cluttered than clear and not particularly easy to use, failing to resonate with browsers and potential customers. A complex UX can be a source of much frustration for users, leading to disengagement, high bounce rates and lost business.
Keeping it simple means just that. The journey every customer who encounters your website goes on should be fluid, seamless and designed with the user in mind. With the right web design, you don’t have to choose between this and achieving your own goals as a website owner.
A rather simple way to apply the KISS principle to your new or refreshed website is by cutting the clutter. Avoid unnecessary messaging that detracts from the UX and prevents you from getting the message across in the first place. Instead use clear, jargon-free language and keep distractions to a minimum.
You should also use content to your advantage, focusing on the user throughout with your words, imagery and overall web design. Be just as selective with the features and functionality of your website, keeping the user at the centre of the design every step of the way. Continue the intuitive experience by making the navigation of your website as clear and simple as possible. It’ll help convert those browsers into loyal customers.
